People who feel unseen are not going to make a scene.

A 2025 survey found that 53% of volunteers quit because they felt used and unappreciated, not tired, used. Tired means the work was too heavy. Used means the work was taken for granted. And here is the cruel reality of church volunteering specifically. The more reliable someone is the more invisible they become.

The volunteer who never misses, never complains, and never needs reminding is the one you forget about while you spend all your energy on the flaky ones and the new ones. The person who has been working the sound booth for six years has probably not heard thank you since they first started. They do not make a scene. They just slowly conclude they do not matter here and start drifting toward somewhere they feel like they do. And when they finally fade you will say it again. Must have burned out. No. You stopped seeing them.
