When you join, you get a Skywards membership number (also called your Emirates Skywards number). This is your unique ID that you use every time you book a flight or claim miles. Invite codes are promotional codes that give new members bonus miles (for example, codes like FLYBETTER have been used in the past for 2,000–2,500 bonus miles).
