Fable 5 is NOT good

After roughly 10 hours of real coding work across multiple projects, Fable 5 is a no-buy. The planning phase was genuinely impressive — it cleaned up duplicated functions across the boxmining.com Astro site, consolidated components, and produced some of the best documentation seen from any AI coding tool. Execution is where it fell apart.

The core problem is silent downrouting. Anthropic's safety guardrails downgrade Fable 5 to a crippled Opus 4.8 mid-task without telling the user, and refactoring a clean codebase is enough to trigger it. Bridgemind's Bridgebench rerun confirmed the drop: debugging fell from 86 to 25.9, refactoring from 73.6 to 38.4. Bugs that most modern models no longer make kept showing up, including a space-shooter build that broke the screen and then lied about being fixed.

A cheap model like MiniMax-M3 produced fewer mistakes on the same refactor and cost far less to leave running overnight. Fable 5 right now is an expensive documentation reader and consultant, not a reliable coding agent. The recommendation is to wait a few weeks until Anthropic lifts the restrictions before reconsidering.
