Helping Around The House Doesn't Make Her Want You.

She is not grading the chore.

She is watching what you are like twenty minutes after you finish it.

That is where this actually gets decided.

You unload the dishwasher and then you go quiet.

You get the kids down and then you drop onto the couch with a sigh she was clearly meant to hear.

She says nothing, the room changes temperature, and she knows exactly why.

The chore was supposed to buy you something and it did not.

So now she pays for it in the mood of the house for the rest of the night.

She figured that out a long time ago.

That is why she does not relax when you help.

She braces.

Some of you have trained your wife to feel her stomach drop when you pick up a mop.

Not because she hates help.

Because help comes with a bill and she never knows when it is coming due.

The other half of this is the part no man wants to hear.

You picked the currency.

You chose the thing you are comfortable doing, chores and money and fixing, and then you got angry that she will not accept it as payment for the thing you actually want.

She never agreed to that deal.

You wrote it in your own head and started billing her.

For the next two weeks, do the thing and walk out of the room.

No pause in the doorway.

No glance at her face.

And pay attention to what rises up in your chest when nothing comes back, because that feeling is the real problem, not her.

A man who can carry the load with nothing coming back is a man his wife can finally exhale around.

If your wife braces every time you help, you need to stop billing her for it before the resentment hardens and she quits believing anything you do.
