My travels to Mumbai, India in 2026 takes me inside Chor Bazaar — the legendary market often called Mumbai’s “Thieves Market.”

Here I’m testing whether an American can haggle with some of India’s toughest negotiators — without getting scammed.

The challenge is simple: I have to buy five items from five different sellers, then turn around and sell each one to someone else. I’m allowed to lose ₹100 total. Anything more, and I lose.

From questionable bargains and unexpected negotiations to a kid literally running away with one of my purchases, Chor Bazaar quickly becomes more than just a shopping challenge. Along the way, I stumble into a side of Mumbai I never expected — including incredible street food, surprising generosity, and a massive religious gathering that brings the market to a standstill.

Can I survive India’s famous “Thieves Market”? Can an American out-haggle Indians? Or am I about to get completely scammed?
