I'm so happy to say that the needed attic insulation is removed (above kitchen and bathroom) in order for me to proceed with building the addition on the house! I did it. And I'm proud of myself! The insulation was a base layer of vermiculite pebbles (about 3.5-4") and then cellulose insulation blown in on top of that (about 6-8"). Everything was treated as asbestos-containing. This was a rather nasty job in the middle of the hottest month of the year, and I was able to do it (with Steve's help) over a 5-6 day period. Mornings were best before the heat got too intense, and then we headed home to do chores at home. Wearing a full hazmat suit with respirator and gloves in a tiny attic space in the middle of summer wasn't easy, but I will say that having the hole in the roof from removing the chimney was a life saver. I could peek my head out to take a quick break and wipe the sweat from my face and clean my respirator out.
The marbles were rolling around in my head for weeks on how to execute this job, and I probably came up with at least half a dozen ideas on how to do it. I finally settled on vacuuming everything up, which did cost more money than a few of the other ideas, but I'd say it was the cleanest way. And bonus - I only coughed up blood for a week!
