Rochester Police Sgt. Justin Collins said the department is down over 100 officers, due in large part to the negative perception of police nationwide and other jobs that offer perks like remote work.
"(It's) unprecedented," Collins said. "Historically, we've never had the situation before. It puts a lot of stress on our current police officers."
"We definitely need people that want to serve this city now more than ever," Collins continued. "We need men and women who want to step up, rise to the occasion, protect the members of this community."
Collins said the pay to join the ranks of RPD is among the highest in New York state, with excellent medical coverage and opportunities for career mobility. Officers also don't have to live in the city, and the eligible age range has expanded.
"19 to 42 years of age. (We need) honest, mature, consistent, emotionally intelligent young people, people that are physically fit or that can become physically fit," he said. "We're looking for those people to come join this police department."
Officer Isaac Armstrong said the shortage is also impacting the community officers are sworn to protect. With fewer officers on the streets, he said it can mean longer response times.
"Being a patrol officer, we are the first line of defense in terms of responding to those types of calls," Armstrong said.
For those thinking of joining, Armstrong said there is satisfaction at the end of the day knowing you helped someone during an emergency and at one of their worst moments. He said you don't get that with a typical 9-to-5 job.
