Here's how I got here...

18: Almost went to the Air Force Academy. Last second change: Columbia University.
18: Walked-on to the track team as an 800-meter runner. Worst runner on the team, not by a little.
20: Got better. Much better.
22: Became university record holder; twice All-East in Division I.
22: Graduated with a degree in environmental science and astronomy. Went to work on a seismic research ship in the Pacific Ocean that had recently been attacked by pirates.
23: Grad school in environmental science. Lived in a tent in the Arctic studying the carbon cycle.
24: Changed gears to freelance writing about science rather than doing it.
25: First writing job: overnight crime reporter at a New York City newspaper.
26: Joined a journalism startup—first reporter hired, before there was an office.
27: Startup became stable. Promptly left for a six-month job as a temp fact-checker at Sports Illustrated. Did menial work for people younger than me. But it was a foot in the door.
28: Science background and crime reporting experience were unique assets at a sports magazine. Become Sports Illustrated’s science and investigative reporter.
29: Exposed Yankees star Alex Rodriguez’s steroid use.
29: From temp to youngest senior writer at Sports Illustrated in a few years.
29: Went backward in title, again, in the interest of skill development: intern at new investigative startup ProPublica.
30: Back to SI, focused on investigations and science of human performance.
30: Signed first book contract to write about the influence of genetics on athleticism.
30: Worked on book.
31: Learned everything I thought about genetics and athleticism was wrong. Started book over, from scratch.
