*Contentment, serenity, holy association and inquiry are four gates to one freedom: please one, and all four open.*
Swamiji takes up Balkanda from Doha 196, where King Dasharatha empties his treasury after Rama's birth. The gifts are read as an allegory of inner wealth: elephants for the quiet confidence that keeps walking while it is criticized, chariots and horses for a personality whose senses are held by the reins of the mind, gold for spiritual value that survives the fire, cows for the wisdom of the _Upanishads_, and the diamond for wisdom itself.
From the contentment those gifts produced he turns to the four gatekeepers of the palace of liberation: _santosha_ (contentment that knows it lacks nothing), _shama_ (the mind that stops swinging with every changing situation), _satsanga_ (the company that awakens the soul's own urge), and _vichara_ (the reflection that finally lands what volumes of study cannot). He shows why pleasing one pleases all four, and why the lesson is repeated every night in sleep and in dream.
The naming ceremony follows. Sage Vasishtha names the four sons and unfolds the mantra science hidden in the name _Rama_, then traces the ascent from _saguna sakara_ through _saguna nirakara_ to _nirguna nirakara_, where the concepts themselves fall away.
