HMRC has paid more than £610,000 of taxpayer money towards the energy bills of civil servants working from home, figures obtained under Freedom of Information reveal. Payments to contractual home workers have more than doubled, from £95,000 in 2022 to £211,000 in 2026, covering around 5,259 staff.

With HMRC only the third-largest government department, the true cost across the civil service is likely far higher.
