Flying Robots Can Now Exchange Tools Midair Despite Powerful Downwash
Flying robots usually keep their distance because getting too close can create dangerous downwash interference. The powerful airflow produced by their propellers can disturb nearby drones, making precise manipulation extremely difficult.
Now, researchers led by Cao have developed FlyingToolbox, a cooperative aerial manipulation system that allows two flying robots to work closely together in a vertical-stack formation.
The system uses two micro-aerial vehicles (MAVs). One, called the toolbox MAV carries a tool, while the other, the manipulator MAV, uses a robotic arm to autonomously dock with and retrieve the tool while both robots remain airborne.
Despite downwash airflow reaching 13.18 metres per second, the system achieved docking accuracy of 0.80 ± 0.33 centimetres.
This demonstrates that flying robots may not always need to avoid close proximity. Instead, they could use it for midair tool exchange and cooperative manipulation.
The technology could eventually support infrastructure inspection, construction, maintenance and disaster response, where robots could deliver or exchange specialized tools without landing.
It may also have space applications. Future robotic spacecraft, lunar drones or planetary robots could potentially exchange tools and equipment while operating in challenging environments where human assistance is difficult.
FlyingToolbox therefore points toward a future where specialized flying robots cooperate as a team rather than working alone.
