#AI-Powered Robot Automatically Hunts Pigeons on a Balcony
Pigeons repeatedly nesting on a balcony became an unusual engineering challenge for Maximilian Bachl, who built a fully automated AI-powered system designed to detect and deter them without manual intervention.
The system starts with a USB camera that continuously monitors the balcony. Live video is processed by an Orange Pi 5, which runs the YOLO-World v2 computer-vision model. Using the neural processing capabilities of the Rockchip RK3588, the system can identify pigeons in real time.
Once a pigeon is detected, its position in the camera's view is calculated. Two servo motors then rotate a modified battery-powered electric water gun toward the detected target. Electronics involving resistors and a transistor allow the computer to trigger the water gun automatically, spraying water toward the pigeon.
The most interesting feature is that the system isn't limited to pigeons. Because YOLO-World supports open-vocabulary detection, the detection target can potentially be changed to other recognizable objects or animals, such as squirrels, cats, or raccoons.
The project demonstrates how affordable hardware and modern AI can work together to create autonomous systems that can see, identify, aim, and respond to real-world situations—all with minimal human intervention.
