The challenge of working from home is rarely the work.
It is switching gears.
One moment you're enjoying the comfort of home. The next, you're expected to focus, think clearly, make decisions and be productive.
And when there is no dedicated space for that transition, work slowly starts spilling into the rest of life.
This home had exactly that challenge.
The homeowners wanted work and rest to remain separate. But there wasn't a dedicated room available for a home office.
What they did have was an open balcony outside the first-floor living area.
Most people would have seen it as an outdoor extension.
We saw the opportunity for something more valuable.
A place to focus.
We enclosed the balcony and transformed it into a dedicated study.
The goal was to create a space to step into a work mindset.
We retained the large window opening and brought in layered blinds so natural light could continue filling the space. The room feels tucked away from the activity of the home, yet never disconnected from it.
That balance was important.
Too much enclosure and it feels restrictive.
Too much openness and distractions return.
The custom work desk stretches across the length of the room, creating generous workspace.
Integrated storage keeps essentials organised and out of sight.
Warm lighting layers create comfort during long work sessions while preserving focus.
Even the proportions were carefully considered.
The room feels intimate enough to encourage concentration, yet open enough to feel comfortable for hours.
That is what good home office design is really about.
About creating an environment that helps your mind do its best work.
Today, this space no longer feels a quiet retreat where you can step away from the noise of the house, focus completely and then step back into family life when the work is done.
Sometimes the most valuable room in a home isn't the biggest one.
It's the one that helps you switch gears.
